On Wednesday afternoon, Year 1 and 2 got the chance to be Systems Engineers! We learned all about what kind of job this is, and what a Systems Engineer does. We then had to work together in teams to build a marble run, just like real engineers! Our challenge was to keep the marble rolling for as long as possible, linking pieces together, testing and changing to make the best, longest marble run. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!
NUSTEM are working closely with our school to improve STEM provision, and encourage children to think about STEM careers. They invited families into school to work with their children in building a marble run. Everyone really enjoyed the session!
Year 1 and 2 visited the Discovery Museum in Newcastle to learn all about toys through history. We searched the exhibits and found old toys, and listened to a story about a toy museum. We even looked at old toys. Some of them were over 100 years old! We made a thaumatrope toy too. A picture is on each side of the card, and when you spin it, the pictures blend together. We had a great time!

Year 2 visited the Town Hall for an afternoon. We learned lots about what the Town Hall was for, and some other interesting facts about it. We even asked the mayor questions using the special microphones, just like real councillors!
We were very lucky when some students came from Sunderland University to teach us all about science! We took part in 5 different activities: a snowstorm in a bottle; making snow from nappies; making snowmen fly with static; creating musical instruments from paper plates, straws and cups; and protecting an egg to stop it from cracking. We loved it, it was great fun and we learned lots.
Reception, Nursery and Year 1 and 2 were very lucky, and some birds of prey came to visit our school! There was a Barn Owl, a Harris Hawk and a Falcon. We learned lots of bird facts, and were lucky enough to see the hawk fly!
Miss Jordan’s and Miss Dooley’s Literacy groups visited the Word, to listen to stories. Since it is October, we listened to spooky stories, to do with Halloween! We drew boggarts, from one of the stories. We also learned a bit of Spanish from one spooky story called Los Gatos Black. We learned a bit about the Day of the Dead, and made skeleton masks to celebrate this!
We had a great time, and are looking forward to the next visit.
Miss Dooley’s and Miss Jordan’s Literacy groups made potions this week, from some spooky instructions. We had to use bone dust, pond water, sea serpent eyeballs, pixie dust, black cobweb, dragon’s blood and bug slime to make a potion to make you smile. We loved it, and then we wrote some amazing instructions of our own for how to make this potion.
Miss Dooley’s Literacy group visited the OpenZone to take part in the Makey Project. We had to make Play-Doh sea creatures that lit up, and Scribble Monsters that were powered by motors. We had a fantastic time!
Thank you to all the parents who attended our Autumn craft morning in KS1. We all really enjoyed ourselves.
