The class spent their first Computing lesson testing searching skills by finding specific websites or information as fast as possible.
To start, they were challenged finding the āHorrible Historiesā website, where many of them found using keywords such as āwebsiteā and ābbcā helped them find the correct page. Once we had discussed our findings, the class were challenged to do the same for the WWF Adopt and Animal Website, as well as the local council’s bin collection website, which they found easier to do once we reviewed the importance of contextualized, specific keywords.
Later in the lesson, we explored different search engines and their efficiency, finding information to answer a group of assorted questions.Ā
Many found that adult, more advanced search engines, had more information, but their were more risks that came with it and they all agreed they should use safer, child centred search engines.
FW said, āDuck Duck Go and Kiddle are safer. It doesn’t record your searches and there is less of a chance to be scammed on these browsers.ā.
AI stated, “One of the positives of Google is that you can find so much information with just basic keywords, but they can track what you type, so it is not private.”
