To extend our understanding of animation, Year 5 explored how stop-motion animations are made, specifically the work of Aardman studios and their films â Wallace and Grommitâ/âChicken runâ.
The class worked to plan a series of still images which, when put together, would create a fluid animation using modelling clay.

As part of our journey in creating a pop-up book suitable for Year One to read in the future, Year Five have spent this afternoon planning each page of their final piece, in addition to how a mechanism or structure could be implemented into it. They were challenged to use levers, sliders and automatic pull strips to bring their books to life! Watch this space for the final product!
As part of our work into the history of animation, we explored the history of animation in the 19th century. We found that children used to use animation as a form of entertainment and it was accessible for everyone to help us. To help us imagine what it was like, we created a âThaumatropeâ and âflip booksâ which demonstrated animation of still image moving through spinning them quickly, back and forth or flicking through quickly.

In Computing, to summarise all of our work up to this point, Year Five explored the Mars Rover and how it uses a CPU (Central Processing Unit) and RAM (Random Access Memory) to navigate the red planet. They reviewed how the ongoing iterations of the rover improved in many areas, such as the input and output too.
To challenge ourselves, the class attempted to send a distress call, in binary, back to NASA, after crash landing on a distant planet. They had only 100 letters to use as their RAM was full. As you can see, all groups got busy and wrote their message of distress before Oxygen ran out!
As part of our Science unit, the class explored how day and night occurs. To do so, the children reviewed the use of sundials and how generations before us read the time. Eventually, we created our own working sundials, making sure we remembered the names for each part (the face and gnomon). Have a look at their hard work!
As part of our art unit, Year Five were tasked with creating their own 3D art installations, using everyday materials. They were encouraged to use outside-the-box thinking to rotate and adapt materials in an effort to create eye-catching and thought evoking displays.
As you can see, their imaginations ran wild!
As part of our work into the Mars Rover, we looked at how it communicates with us, particularly Binary.
The class discussed how different modes of communication can become to difficult to transmit or be a victim of miscommunication. As a result, the class reviewed binary as a basic and difficult to confuse data language, especially for computers. The class looked at how binary uses 8-digits, an array of 1’s and 0’s, to communicate messages. They looked at how certain combinations of numbers equal different letters. We discussed patterns between our existing numbers system (Base Ten) and how binary differs.
Finally, they were challenged to translate a message with binary code and even create our own using an English to binary alphabet conversion table! See if you can challenge yourself!
This week, as part of the Decider Skills workshop, the explored the skills âit will passâ and âright nowâ. Children discussed scenarios where they had felt upset, stressed and anxious and how it felt like it would never end. We were introduced to the âit will passâ skullcap, where children were encouraged to think almost lucidly about the situation they find themselves in and how it will eventually pass us by. Furthermore, we looked at âright nowâ, a visualisation technique used to escape a stressful scenario and, instead, review a more relaxing scenario.
This week, Year Five began a six-week program detailing how children their age can regulate their emotions. We looked at âthe fizzâ. The feeling where we all begin to feel overwhelmed and ready to explode.
Pupils explored STOPP decider skills, as well as the five finger breathing technique to calm us down in situation where we feel anxious or stressed.

Parents can collect their children from their usual door at 2:30pm and then go in via the front door by the office. If you are collecting another child on behalf of another parent, please can you let the office know.
