Community

Marine Park works with a number of organisations within the community and is very proud of the partnerships we have established. Marine Park children have the opportunity to broaden their experiences through collaborating with businesses, professional bodies, arts and cultural organisations, charities and voluntary organisations, colleges and universities. These organisations and groups can offer young people ways to find meaning and create value in the world.

Northumbria Police Mounted Section meet our Mini Police

21st April 2023Shelley Metcalfe

The Marine Park Mini Police were delighted to meet Prince and Parker, Northumbria Police’s two noble Police Horses. The treat was a kind gesture from Northumbria Police, in recognition of the children’s commitment to the Mini Police Project.

The children were fascinated to learn that all the police horses in Northumbria have a name which begins with ‘P.’ Something which is a long standing tradition. Prince (the brown one!) was named in honour of The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip following his passing. They were intrigued to learn that Parker (the white one!) was selected to escort the late Queen Elizabeth II as she was carried to Windsor as part of her funeral procession.

The horses and their officers gave the children a demonstration of some of the techniques they can use to control crowds. They also gave the children an insight in to the day to day life of a Police Horse and the specialist skills that they can draw upon, including their senses and their ability to assess risk and danger.

It was a wonderful opportunity for all!!

Y3 Local Democracy in Action

22nd March 2023Stuart McVittie-Mathews

Today, three children from Year 3 were selected to represent the school at South Tyneside Council’s “Staryland” event, which was designed to explore the ideas that underpin democracy in fun and creative ways.

First, the class worked with children from other schools to learn the history of “Staryland” and decide on a list of qualities that make a good leader. Then, the children heard the candidates give a speech explaining why they would be the best person to elect as leader.

Children then voted to elect their chosen leader. After the event, the children met the Mayor of South Tyneside and other council officials. Overall, a great trip to show children democracy in action!
