‘Once Team Marine…
Always Team Marine’

Akiba Azad

28th January 2024Shelley Metcalfe

I left Marine Park in 2009 and then studied at Harton Technology College and Sixth Form. After that, I did my degree at Newcastle University in English Literature, graduating with a 2:1 in 2019, and then my Master’s degree in Cross-Cultural Communication and International Marketing, where I graduated with a Distinction in 2022.

I remember how much I loved to read, getting lost in all these different worlds, this never stopped. I also enjoyed being creative, especially during Big Write. I remember being supported by all my teachers and learning that it didn’t matter that I didn’t speak and read in English perfectly because I ALWAYS tried to do my best, Miss Peel and Miss Kysow will remember! I found that trying hard and making mistakes along the way are important as they helped me learn how to be better.

I’m now working at Newcastle University, and I am a writer. The love for being creative never stopped. My poems have been featured in two printed works and I have performed at Spoken Word events, including Poet in the City and Born Lippy, and with my writer’s group, I have performed at Newcastle Fringe Festival and Novum Festival!

If you have something that you enjoy, like reading and writing, know that with hard work you can have a future in that!

Dear Team Marine,

I have been made aware of Marine Parks ‘work on careers’ initiative. I think this is a fantastic idea for all the wonderful boys and girls studying at Marine Park Primary School. I wanted to take part and share a part of my story.
The effort, dedication and care that was provided by the teachers at Marine Park primary school has profoundly shaped my life. When I first started I remember being very bad at mathematics and struggling to read whilst the other boys and girls around me were speeding through the pages. Thankfully I had a superhero in my earliest years who gave me the patience, motivation and attention I needed to sit my SATs and pass! Her name… Jane Kysow. Jane’s work pushes me to reach my potential to this day.
I left Marine Park in 2009, after which I attended Mortimer Community College, then Harton 6th form, where I sat my A-levels. The skills I gained from my teachers at primary school helped me achieve grades A to C in all my subjects. Geography was my favourite subject so proceeding my secondary education I graduated with a BA Geography degree from Northumbria University in Newcastle in 2020.
After Graduating I spent a year traveling and working in different parts of the world so that I could immerse myself in different cultures and improve my knowledge and understanding of the world. In 2021 I returned and moved to London where I worked really hard to earn a place on a Graduate Leadership Programme by the Metropolitan Police Force. Whilst on the programme I was able to fast track the police training process. I was enrolled into an intensive residential policing academy where I went from being a civilian to a Police Constable in 8 weeks. This process can sometimes take 18 months! After this I worked as a dedicated ward Constable in North West London where I helped to tackle long standing criminal activities in some of London’s most challenged neighbourhoods.
In April of 2023 I was offered a position to work for the Central Government in Cabinet Office. In this position I work closely with senior government officials and stakeholders as an Executive Officer in Operational Deliver Support. I help to support the design and implementation of HM Government’s policies and the Prime Minister’s priorities; and to ensure the delivery of the finest public services by attracting and developing the best public servants and improving the efficiency of government.
To all the amazing teachers that work incredibly hard and Allison Burden my head teacher, thank you. Your effort can shape a childs entire life as the effort of my teachers has shaped my life. To all the boys and girls at Marine Park, If you can dream it, with enough hard work, you can become it. Work hard and listen to your teachers!
I have attached an image of when I was a Police Officer to this email. I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Syed Tambir Uddin

Marine Park Alumni: Adiba Baksh- Women in Tech Graduate

16th November 2023Shelley Metcalfe

I left Marine Park in 2009 and received the Nancy Gladstone Award in Year 6. I then attended Harton Technology College and 6th Form. Following that, I accepted an offer to study Accounting at Northumbria University.

Currently I am working at Sage which is a global company that specialises in accounting software. Our headquarters is located in Newcastle. In my job I spend most of my days building apps to make tasks easier and faster for Directors and VPs. I also help in resolving major issues that can happen with important services/applications. I am proud to share that I was a finalist for the Graduate of the Year at the Women in Tech Excellence Awards 2022.

I am proud to be part of Team Marine and the endless opportunities provided. The school was supportive with all the different STEM based programs we had available and all the enjoyable activities we got to do. Big thank you to all the staff for a memorable education!

Demi Stokes- Children In Need

10th October 2023Shelley Metcalfe

At Marine Park, we are always immensely proud of our children and their achievements. We also hope that together, with our parents/carers, our children develop the dispositions and attitudes to support them in achieving their future aspirations.

We were thrilled to read about former student Demi Stokes and her involvement with this year’s Children in Need Campaign. Demi is one of the England Lionesses and joined other celebrities to celebrate the power of positive relationships.

It was at school, where Demi’s interest in football was supported by her teacher Mr Williamson.

Marine Park is proud of you Demi, thank-you for the wonderful contribution you are continuing to make…

Dr. Mohammed Arifuzzaman ‘Arif’ Baksh (BVetMed MRCVS)

30th June 2023Shelley Metcalfe

I left Marine Park in 2010 which set me up to get into Harton Technology College and Sixth Form, and having finished my time there I had accepted an offer to study veterinary medicine at The Royal Veterinary College in London.

I’m hugely grateful for the five years I spent there and had the chance to travel the country working in all sorts of veterinary practices, farms, zoos and aquariums. I even had the chance to come back up north to spend some time taking care of the seals at Tynemouth Aquarium.

I graduated in 2022 and have been working as a small animal vet since in a practice in London. Now I spend most of my days looking after dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, mice, hamsters and more.

I’m forever thankful for the opportunities that Team Marine gave to me during my time there,
