The children in Reception Class worked with Mel from NUSTEM today to find out about what it means to be a pharmacist. They had great fun exploring how to dissolve things in water.
This week we have been learning about grip strength and what can affect it. Pupils took part in a grip strength championship by lifting different sized pieces of fruit wearing a variety of gloves to test which materials created more or less friction.
Children will use their ideas from this session to design a glove to improve grip in sporting events.
We have been learning about living things and their habitats. The Royal Horticultural Society and the National History Museum have launched a campaign to map out the habitats in our country. We followed their advice and went searching for the habitats in our school. We really enjoyed it and were surprised at how many different habitats we have. Here we are making scientific observations about each habitat.
This week, Y3 have been preparing and planning for their investigation – Does hand span affect grip strength?
After discussing the possible variables and deciding what they would keep the same and what they would change, children measured their hand span so they were ready to gather the data in the following lesson
.
Once children had measured their handspan, the class were asked to organise themselves in ascending order and to spot any patterns relating to height and handspan.
Today, the class explored the world of inventions, designing their own unique products which explored the use of movement to generate electricity. Once they had became product designers, the children tried their hand at creating their own wind-powered devices which lifted a counter-weight as the blades on their turbines spun.
Check out the pictures below!
We have been learning about how sound travels. We made our own string telephones and tested different materials and lengths of string to see if it improved the quality of the sound we could hear. We took advantage of the sunny weather and took our lesson outside!
Year 2 have been learning all about botany with Mel from NUSTEM. It was fantastic to have our adults from home in school as part of this exciting afternoon.
Year 4 had a great time learning all about insects in preparation for our upcoming sceince topic about Living Things. We really enjoyed the workshop given by Nustem. We had the opportunity to practise our scientific skills of observation (Looking closely) and open mindedness (being willing to change our minds). We got to use magnifying glasses to help us to see a large range of different insects and practise our drawing skills by creating a scietific diagram of our favourite insect.
We then got to create our very own 3D insects with our grown ups! A big Thank You to everyone who came, what a great turn out. We hope to see you soon.
As part of our current work on States of Matter, we have been learning about evaporation and condensation. To see these in action we created the water cycle in a cup!
Our science topic this term is States of Matter. We have been finding out how we can change from one state to another. We had great fun being scientists and conducting an experiment to test if weather conditions affect the rate of evaporation.
