Art and Design Curriculum Statement

At Marine Park Primary School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. In line with the whole school PACE curriculum, the intent of our Art and Design curriculum is to deliver lessons that offer cultural capital opportunities; are accessible to children of all abilities and that maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more.

The study of Art and Design is viewed by both staff and pupils as a pathway to future careers and learning opportunities. The teaching of Art and Design provides children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and a means to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas. We celebrate the rich multi-cultural background of our school community and use this to enrich learning.

Children are introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by local, national and international artists. We plan visits to Art Galleries to allow the children to be inspired and excited by Art fostering a lifelong appreciation of Art and Design. We enhance learning through these experiences building on Cultural capital. Children will also learn how Art reflects and shapes our history and contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
